Sweet wines
The Islamic tradition of eating sweet foods was spread to the Mediterranean and has now become part of the cultural heritage of the Mediterranean diet. Alicante has one of the oldest traditions in the whole country for both wines and sweets such as ‘turron’ (nougat) and chocolate.
The sweet wines produced by the Moscatel grape, including the sweet wine ‘mistela’, can also be produced with the red grape, ‘Giro’, Monastrell or other varieties. It´s taste is described as fruity, smooth and elegant matching perfectly with chocolates, truffles and cakes. Almost all wineries still produce this type of wine to retain both creativity and tradition.
